Wimmera Health Care Group is excited to announce the contract has been awarded to build the much anticipated Wimmera Cancer Centre.

The contract was awarded to local company, Locks Construction Pty Ltd and Wimmera Health Care Group CEO Catherine Morley said the company is looking to get straight into the project.

“We expect Locks Construction to start work on the site by the end of January, with the completion date set for the end of November,” Ms Morley said.

“I’m sure the community will be very happy to see work start on the centre, a project which has received so much community support.

“This wouldn’t be possible if it wasn’t for the successful fundraising from the community as well as the support and financial contributions from the Commonwealth and State Governments for this $5.3 million project.

“The Commonwealth Government made the first contribution to the project of $1 million in March, 2015. The State Government has since contributed a further $2.6 million to make the project a reality.”

Some of the major fundraising contributors included the Wimmera Health Care Group Foundation, Wimmera Hospice Care Trust, Geoff and Helen Handbury Foundation, Luv-A-Duck, Rural Northwest Health, Edenhope and District Memorial Hospital, Hillross Horsham and Apex Club of Horsham.

Wimmera Health Care Group Board of Management Chair Marie Aitken said an official name for the centre had been decided on. The name is:

Wimmera Cancer Centre

Supporting our community with cancer, palliative care and dialysis services

“We would like to thank everyone who has been involved in the process to date. From team members, to community members who have consulted with us and worked to raise the funds for the much-needed centre,” Mrs Aitken said.

“It will be an exciting year as we can now watch the centre take shape.”
