Last financial year, Wimmera Hospice Care supported 112 people, their families and carers.

Wimmera Health Care Group chief executive Chris Scott said that daunting figure shows how important the service is, and why it is going to be an integral part of the proposed new Wimmera Cancer Centre.

Wimmera Hospice Care Trust Chairman Mr Bill Ower has announced that the Wimmera Hospice Care Trustees will donate $50,550 to the Wimmera Cancer Centre fundraising appeal.

“The Centre will provide a vital service to many patients, families and carers across the Wimmera and Southern Mallee and Wimmera Hospice Care will hold a very important place in the new proposed facilities,” Mr Ower said.

“This is a very generous contribution to the Wimmera Cancer Centre project and we are very grateful for their support,” Mr Scott said.  “Hospice Care, also known as Palliative Care, is about caring for people with ‘life limiting illnesses’. People can be supported by Wimmera Hospice Care for months or intermittently over a number of years.”

Mr Ower said the service covers the four local government areas in the Wimmera region with registered nurses helping manage symptoms and working with the local nurses and doctors involved in the patient’s care.

“Support is provided to the clients, their families and carers at home, in aged care facilities and while in hospital” Mr Ower said.

“Often this is a cancer related illness but we are increasingly seeing other types of illnesses.

“We also offer a bereavement support program to family and/or carers and have specialist doctors and a nurse practitioner visit regularly from Ballarat.”

Oncology services, Dialysis and Wimmera Hospice Care will be incorporated into the proposed Wimmera Cancer Centre which is expected to be a $3million project.

Mr Scott said, “Anyone interested in making a contribution to the project should do so by contacting the hospital on 5381 9209 or dropping their donation into the main hospital reception.  All donations are tax deductible.”
