SERVICE DESCRIPTION/OVERVIEW
Barkuma Respite Services is managed by Community Options. Barkuma House is a 4 bed modified cottage style home located at 13 Arnott Street Horsham situated next to Wimmera Health Care Group. Barkuma House is funded by the Commonwealth Government under the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) and offers a range of services that aim to support and maintain care relationships between carers and clients. Barkuma provides quality respite care for frail older people so that their regular carers can take a break.
Barkuma provides planned and emergency respite to older people (over the ages of 65 or over the age of 50 if indigenous), who may require extra support or whose carer is requiring a break.
The services are delivered at Barkuma House are:
Cottage Respite: Overnight Community Respite (also known as short term care) provides 24 hour care to your love one in a cottage setting, whilst family carers have a break from their caring role. It gives carers the chance to attend to everyday activities or go on a mini break while ensuring your loved one is being supported.
Centre Based Day Respite / Community Access - Group: Regular group respite activities. Care recipients enjoy participating social experiences, activities and outings whilst their family carers have some ‘time out’ from the caring role. There are 3 service provided by Barkuma Respite Services.
Happy Wanderers: A regular excursion within the Wimmera Area.
Ladies Group: Supports older ladies of varying abilities to participate in social activities, small projects, cooking and reminiscing within a friendly home like environment.
Men’s Group: Supports older men of varying abilities to participate in social activities, gardening, small projects and reminiscing, within a friendly home environment.

FEES
Community Options consumers are expected to contribute to the cost of their care, if your personal circumstances allow. The Australian Government subsidises a range of services. Any fees and eligibility for subsidies will be discussed and agreed upon with you before you receive the relevant services.
If you believe you would face financial hardship in paying the required fees you can ask to be considered for financial hardship assistance. Each case is considered on an individual basis and no Community Option consumer will be denied a service due to their inability to pay.
AFTER HOURS SERVICE
Community Options provides 24 hour emergency support service to consumers. For enquiries or more information contact Community Options.
REFERRALS
Community Options welcomes enquiries and incoming referrals to the service. Referrals may come from individuals, carers, health professionals, family members or friends.

ELIGIBILITY
An assessment to attend Barkuma will be conducted by Community Options Barkuma Coordinator to determine eligibility and suitability prior to attending.
